‘Stay awake and be prepared, for you do not know the date or moment of my return’ (Matthew 25:1-13).
This is one of the strangest parables. Ten bridesmaids have been invited to the wedding. All are waiting, but one group prepares for the future and the other doesn’t. There are long delays. When the bridegroom comes late, the second group is left behind.
You never know what the future is going to look like. The future belongs to those who plan. Gospel entrepreneurs are always future people.
There is a great analysis in the book ‘How to Win: Rugby and Leadership from Twickenham to Tokyo’ by former England Rugby coach Sir Clive Woodward OBE. He explained that when the second half came, they took off their muddy, dirty shirts and put on new shirts so they could have a brand-new start. Games are won or lost in the second half, but planning for the future is the main lesson from this parable. Let’s be futurists and let us plan, because the future belongs to those who plan for it.

Vicar of Holy Trinity Leicester, John McGinley is Executive Director of the National Myriad Programme, a new initiative from CCX and the Gregory Centre for Church Multiplication. For the last couple of years John has also worked with New Wine as head of Church Planting Development. The Myriad vision is to connect and support those – especially lay leaders – who feel God is calling them to plant new churches as a way of re-evangelising our nation.
