Forging a better future in Scotland
Daniel and Linsey Melo da Silva’s social enterprise, Forge and Equip, specialises in custom-made, sustainable fabrications, and supportive training opportunities in East Lothian. Their mission is to support and bring positive change to some of the current needs in Scotland where, as of December 2022, 9.7% of 16-24 year-olds in the country were unemployed, and 11.5% of households in Edinburgh were workless. With three lives lost daily to drug use and mental health challenges referred to as a national crisis in Scotland, Daniel and Linsey believe that finding worthwhile work is crucial for positive living.
They explain: ‘Our workshop is the go-to destination for hands-on learning in welding, woodwork, and painting. Trainees gain valuable on-the-job experience, quickly applying new skills in real-world scenarios. We build lasting relationships with our team members, equipping them for sustainable and purposeful careers, regardless of their chosen path. This isn't just fabrication; it's about forging transformational opportunities, one spark at a time.
‘Fabrication is the construction of items from different parts using at least one of a range of processes and materials such as metal, laminates, wood and other solid surface materials. Our vision is to equip individuals to contribute positively to their communities by providing meaningful practical training and employment opportunities.’
‘No matter what people have been through, we believe there is always hope and restoration to be found. At Forge and Equip, we believe there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Every individual and business has unique needs and goals, and we tailor our services to meet them. We offer hard and soft skills training to those who need it most, addressing common risk factors like poverty, previous convictions, or addictions that impact employment struggles. At our workshop in East Linton, a hub of creativity and learning, we offer tailored opportunities for individuals and groups to develop a wide array of skills from welding to woodworking.’
Forge and Equip offers varied short courses from welding and woodworking to intensive training in fabrication, a Route-to-Employment course as well as children’s workshops. Find out more at www.forgeandequip.co.uk.
